Beneath the glossy UI lies a psychological machinery as precise—and as predatory—as any casino floor.

Each micro-reward triggers a squirt of dopamine—the anticipation chemical—training the brain to crave the next pull.
Designers now speak openly of “Dopamine Design”: neon palettes, bounce animations, and celebratory pings chosen because they light up the reward circuitry before reason wakes up.

In 2006, interface designer Aza Raskin invented Infinite Scroll—a page that never runs out. He later called it “behavioral cocaine.” The pattern abolishes stopping cues, so minutes dissolve into hours while the feed dutifully reloads more uncertainty-laced content.

In 2012 Facebook secretly tweaked 689,003 News Feeds—without consent—to test emotional contagion. Users shown fewer positive posts wrote more negative updates, and vice-versa, proving that a platform could steer collective mood with an algorithmic dial.

Critics called it social engineering; defenders called it A/B testing. Either way, the experiment revealed that what we feel online can be manufactured as easily as what we buy.
The tactics grew darker when Cambridge Analytica siphoned data from up to 87 million profiles to build psychographic voter models. Ads were then microtargeted to personality traits—fearful voters saw migration panic, agreeable voters saw community promises. The platforms taught us to chase variable rewards.
Our counter-move is to reclaim variable rest.
Because attention, once lost, is the one currency Big Tech can’t refund.
